Despite its isolated location, it is widely considered one of Africa&#8217;s most breathtaking and undisturbed safari destinations, often called &#8220;the true African wilderness<\/p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Top wildlife and birdwatching<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The park is home to over 77 mammal species and 476 bird species, some of which are found nowhere else in Uganda. Key wildlife and birds to spot include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul class=\"ul1\"><li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s3\">Unique species:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/viewer\/place?mid=\/m\/087qky&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjrt8aR0sePAxWI1AIHHRpSGNsQqdYPegYIAwgHEAE\"><span class=\"s4\">Kidepo<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is the only park in Uganda where you can find cheetahs and the graceful greater and lesser kudu.<\/span><\/li><li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s3\">The Big Four:\u00a0Visitors can reliably see four of the &#8220;Big Five&#8221; African animals:\u00a0lions,\u00a0elephants,\u00a0leopards, and vast herds of buffalo, which number in the thousands.<\/span><\/li><li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s3\">Other mammals:\u00a0The park is also home to\u00a0Rothschild&#8217;s giraffes,\u00a0Burchell&#8217;s zebras,\u00a0striped and spotted hyenas,\u00a0aardwolves, and numerous antelope species, including the Jackson&#8217;s hartebeest and\u00a0oribi.<\/span><\/li><li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s3\">Birdlife:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/viewer\/place?mid=\/m\/087qky&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjrt8aR0sePAxWI1AIHHRpSGNsQqdYPegYIAwgHEAU\"><span class=\"s4\">Kidepo<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is a birdwatcher&#8217;s paradise, offering sightings of Uganda&#8217;s only population of wild ostriches, as well as secretary birds, kori bustards, and a high density of valleys, which offer different game-viewing experiences:<\/span><\/p><ul class=\"ul1\"><li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s3\">Narus Valley:\u00a0As the primary permanent water source in the park, the Narus Valley is the best place to see wildlife year-round, especially during the dry season. While it has less wildlife than Narus, it is the best place to find ostriches and offers magnificent views toward South Sudan.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Cultural experiences<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Kidepo&#8217;s location in the Karamoja subregion provides a unique opportunity to experience the culture of two distinct communities:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul class=\"ul1\"><li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s3\">The Karamojong:\u00a0A visit to a traditional homestead, or\u00a0<i>manyatta<\/i>, offers insight into the semi-nomadic pastoralist lifestyle of the Karamojong people, their traditions, and unique dances.<\/span><\/li><li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s3\">The Ik people:\u00a0For a more adventurous cultural encounter, visitors can take a guided hike into the Morungole Mountains to visit the remote Ik tribe, a community with a unique history and language.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Other notable activities<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Beyond the classic safari, Kidepo offers a range of other activities:<\/span><\/p><ul class=\"ul1\"><li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s3\">Nature Walks and Hiking:\u00a0Guided walks from the Apoka Tourism Centre offer close-up encounters with animals like zebras and reedbucks.
